5G Security Recommendations Package #1

The NGMN 5G security group has identified 2 series of threats and described those through 9 key issues. The first series focuses on the Access Network, while the second focuses on DoS attacks scenarios that could emerge as IoT market greatly expands with 5G. Each of these key issues contains a description section that explains the problem and why it could have an impact in 5G. Thus, a recommendation section describes for each key issue a solution to address the problem.

5G Security Recommendations Package #2 : Network Slicing

The NGMN Requirements and Architecture (P1) work stream on Security has been working with a focus on security threats or flaws that could emerge through the Network Slicing use in 5G.

Further Elaboration on NGMN KPIs and Requirements for 5G

The NGMN Requirements and Architecture (P1) is currently working on key performance metrics relevant to 3GPP TSG RAN SI “Scenarios and Requirements for Next Generation Access Technologies”. The attached document is a summary from the ongoing NGMN P1 work, updating some KPIs and respective values, providing high level evaluation approach for KPIs.
The work has so far mainly focussed on eMBB, and that it is still investigating requirements for mMTC and URLCC. Therefore it is anticipated that there will be further requirements/KPIs developed as that work matures.

Further Elaboration on NGMN Requirement Metrics and Deployment Scenarios for IMT-2020

The NGMN Requirements and Architecture (P1) team is working on representative key performance indicators (KPIs) and representative deployment scenarios relevant to ITU-R WP5D’s work on General Technical Performance Requirements and Evaluation Criteria/Methods for IMT-2020. The attached document summarizes the KPIs currently considered by NGMN as relevant for the development of IMT-2020. In addition, the document also provides relevant deployment scenarios and high level guidance on how the identified KPIs could be evaluated.

Description of Network Slicing Concept

The NGMN 5G White Paper Version 1.0 published in February 2015 has positioned the demands and business requirements beyond 2020 and introduced the network service deployment concept of Network Slicing with some high level examples.

In order to enable SDOs to develop viable standards for Network Slicing there is a need to refine the concept and establish a common terminology for Network Slicing. This would also help actors across the industry to have a common understanding of the expectations and the characteristics of such important concept.

This document describes further details of the concept of Network Slicing and provides common terminology.

NGMN Requirement Metrics and Deployment Scenarios for 5G

NGMN sent a Liaison Statement to 3GPP on December 4th 2015.

Earlier this year, the NGMN Alliance published its 5G White Paper [1] providing consolidated 5G operator requirements. In its June Forum and Board meetings, NGMN has launched a 5G-focused work-programme that will build on and further evolve the White Paper guidelines with the intention to support the standardisation and subsequent availability of 5G for 2020 and beyond.

A key activity in the work-programme is the Requirements and Architecture (P1). The objective of P1 is to provide timely, well informed technical requirements and architectural principles to the relevant SDOs & ITU-R. P1 focuses on end-to-end system and refining and prioritising results from the NGMN 5G White Paper. Another key aspect will be the interaction with vertical industry representatives in different regions to identify and validate requirements.

The NGMN Requirements and Architecture (P1) is currently working on the mapping of some NGMN whitepaper requirements to KPIs relevant to 3GPP TSG RAN. The attached document is a summary from the ongoing NGMN P1 work, focusing mainly on key performance metrics and representative deployment scenarios. NGMN would like to point out that the work has so far mainly focussed on eMBB, and that it is still investigating requirements for new verticals and in particular mMTC and URLCC. Therefore it is anticipated that there may be further requirements/KPIs developed as that work matures.

NGMN asks 3GPP TSG RAN to consider the requirements contained in the NGMN 5G white paper and the further proposals for representative deployment scenarios and key performance metrics in the attachment as an input to the upcoming study to define the scenarios and requirements for 5G RAN. In addition, NGMN informs 3GPP TSG RAN about the intention to keep 3GPP TSG RAN updated on our future NGMN 5G work-programme and to provide further elaboration of representative deployment scenarios and requirements as they become available. The NGMN Alliance is willing to pursue further discussions to assist 3GPP in defining the scenarios and requirements, so as to maximize the ability of the new technologies defined by 3GPP to address the NGMN 5G vision.

NGMN View of 5G as an End-to-End Ecosystem – Alignment of 3GPP SA and RAN

NGMN sent a Liaison Statement to 3GPP on 4th December 2015.

Earlier this year, the NGMN Alliance published its 5G White Paper providing consolidated 5G operator requirements. In June, NGMN has launched a 5G-focused work-programme that will build on and further evolve the White Paper guidelines with the intention to support the standardisation and subsequent availability of 5G for 2020 and beyond. A key activity of the work-programme is the development of technical 5G requirements and end-to-end architecture design principles. The results of this activity will be delivered to all major SDOs, to the ITU and to other 5G related organisations.

NGMN has reviewed the summary of the 3GPP TSG RAN workshop on 5G. NGMN notes that the summary broadly takes into account the views of NGMN, however NGMN would like to emphasise the importance for the 5G RAN studies and SA studies to be synergetic and believes that the whole design should focus on the e2e service level requirements and goals for the whole 5G system. Therefore, we kindly request 3GPP to ensure continued inter-TSG coordination toward this goal as 5G studies progress.

Recommendations For Small Cell Development and Deployment

This document is the final deliverable of the NGMN Small Cell project. It summarizes all the activities that have run in parallel in the 3 work streams of the project and it contains recommendations for cost effective Small Cell deployment and development.

In particular, this deliverable contains a summary of the most promising use cases and scenarios for Small Cell deployment that have been identified among the operators members of NGMN. Some technical solutions able to proper address the identified scenario, are also analysed. Moreover, a list of the most critical barriers for Small Cell deployment have been identified and some of those barriers have been addressed (i.e. traffic geolocalization in order to proper place Small Cells, macro-Small Cell mobility and load coordination, …).

This deliverable also contains the requirements for multi-vendor deployment of HetNet networks that are broadly addressed in dedicated deliverables [3, 4].

At last, also backhaul requirements for HetNet networks beyond release 8 are included, summarizing and complementing further requirements contained in other NGMN deliverables.

Test Specification for Multi-Vendor SON Deployment

This document is a deliverable of the NGMN Small Cell project. It describes the interoperability tests that part of the test programme of second joint SCF and NGMN Plugfest. The initial target is to include these tests in the program of the second joint SCF and NGMN Plugfest. The tests, however, have a broader purpose and can be used in other future events.
