Sergio Benco
Senior Project Manager, TIM
Sergio Benco is member of the Technology Innovation, Standardization and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) department and leads the Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) development team. His current work focuses on the development of advanced Open RAN and 5G network management solutions, aligned with O-RAN Alliance and 3GPP specifications. In this context, he is driving the adoption of RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) functionalities within TIM, enabling artificial intelligence-based automation and optimization in RAN operations and maintenance.
He serves as TIM’s delegate in the 3GPP TSG for Services and System Aspects (SA), Working Group 5 (SA5), which is responsible for standardization activities related to network management, orchestration, and operational frameworks.
He led the programmable network program within Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) “RESTART”, contributing to the development of sustainable, cloud-native, and distributed edge computing architectures.
Throughout his academic and professional career, he has developed solid expertise in 5G systems, Open RAN architectures, service management and orchestration, artificial intelligence applications for telecommunications, and software architecture, combined with project management experience in complex, multi-stakeholder environments. His early research activities focused on spectrum sensing, Bluetooth/WiFi coexistence, and cognitive radio technologies.
