Information from NGMN to GCF on requirements regarding 5G device certification.
Liaison Statement from NGMN Work Item on "RAN functional split and x-haul” to several industry organizations
27 October 2017
27th October 2017
NGMN would like to thank 3GPP for sending the Liaison Statement on Status Icons related to 5G. NGMN kindly informs 3GPP that at this point of time NGMN does not have feedback for 3GPP on requirements and granularity for Service indicators and/or RAT indicators related to 5G.
NGMN informs the recipients of this liaison statement that the first version of the NGMN 5G End-to-End Architecture Framework has been published. The document provides a high-level framework of architecture principles and requirements that provide guidance and direction for standards development organisations in the shaping of the fifth-generation suite of interoperable capabilities, enablers, and services. It builds on the architectural concepts and proposals implied by the NGMN White Paper of February 2015 and subsequent deliverables published by NGMN.
NGMN acknowledges that 3GPP is specifying 5G architecture as Service-Based where an NF (network function) is composed by a set of NF services. NGMN has currently discussed about two possible approaches The NF service is treated as VNF and the corresponding NFV management and orchestration mechanism can be employed. The NF service is treated as VNFC, and the NF is regarded as VNF. Therefore the VNFM (VNF manager) should be enhanced to support VNFC level lifecycle management. NGMN kindly request ETSI NFV IFA WG and ETSI NFV EVE WG to investigate related approaches to support SBA, e.g., NF service-level management, and provide information to NGMN.
Following on from the previous liaison statement presented in 3GPP RAN Meeting #75, NGMN informs 3GPP in this liaison statement that the first project deliverable containing first test results regarding 5G candidate technology building blocks will be finalized and made publicly available on the NGMN web site by mid-June 2017. A subset of such building blocks is provided in this liaison statement.
Since communicating an initial set of Architecture Principles to 3GPP TSG WG2 in November 2016 the NGMN Requirements and Architecture (P1) E2E Architecture Framework group has developed their End-to-end Architecture Framework document further. Given the relative timescales of the project and of SA2’s work item for the 5G Architecture - Phase 1 it has been decided to share an interim version of the NGMN Architecture Framework document in order for SA2 to become aware of the additional principles agreed thus far, and to see the full scope of the activity.
NGMN operators believe that a Service-Based Architecture (SBA), characterized by modularized services and lightweight interaction protocols, is suitable for a 5G architectural framework. The SBA approach provides a variety of benefits for the 5G architectural framework, e.g. flexible and adaptable network capabilities, faster development cycles, updates, and a dynamic discovery and launch of services on demand in the network. NGMN acknowledges that 3GPP is working on the normative phase of a Service-Based architecture for 5G, with an emphasis on the control plane for the R15 time-frame. NGMN operators kindly recommend that 3GPP takes NGMN operators’ requirements into account and defines the 5G baseline architecture using the SBA approach. NGMN operators expect that SA2 will develop the SBA approach for the 5G system in Release 15 and continue to enhance the SBA approach beyond Release 15. Furthermore NGMN operators kindly request CT3/CT4 to work on the appropriate protocol design for the Service-Based Interfaces in Release 15.
Liaison Statement from NGMN Alliance to 3GPP on Test of Technology Building Blocks phase of the Trial and Testing Initiative
NGMN Trial and Test Initiative / Test of Technology Building Block work has led to identify a set of building blocks as promising candidates for 5G NR (New Radio) Phase 1 standardization and/or implementation activity. This set can be found in the attached document which was sent to 3GPP via a liaison letter.
