DoCoMo’s LTE field trials report 120Mbps throughput
Tuesday, 17 March 2009 - Japan's largest mobile operator by subscribers, NTT DoCoMo, yesterday announced the successful completion of initial field tests of Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless technology, claiming data transmissions rates of 120Mbps in an urban setting. Working in partnership with local manufacturer Fujitsu, the carrier has installed a pilot 4x4 multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) LTE network in a test zone in the northern Japanese city of Sapporo in Hokkaido using 10MHz of spectrum. The trial network, using prototype LTE base stations jointly developed by both firms, transmitted data to a device at rates of around 120Mbps. DoCoMo estimates this would be equivalent to 240Mbps throughput using the 20MHz maximum bandwidth that LTE allows.
