NGMN Releases Requirements on Self-Optimising Networks

London (United Kingdom) / Frankfurt (Germany), January 19th, 2009 – The Next Generation Mobile Network (NGMN) Alliance has released a document which outlines the requirements for self-optimising networks (SON).

In order to provide overall guidance on solutions supporting SONs for the future, the new NGMN document provides several use cases and identifies requirements of operators aiming to implement SONs. The NGMN document builds upon the previously released recommendation “Use Cases Related to Self-Organising Networks”.

SONs offer key operational and financial benefits for operators thinking of investing in next generation networks.  Future networks must be dynamic and have the ability to adapt to user requirements. Self optimising networks are capable of reconfiguring themselves for maximum operational efficiency which in turn significantly reduces the total cost of ownership of a network.

NGMN’s document focuses on the key parts of the “Technical Working Group SON” requirements including:

• SON enablers
• Self-configuration
• Self-optimisation
• Fault Management & Fault Correction
• O&M Related SON

“Self-optimising networks are a key part in the future proofing of network reliability and operational efficiency,” said Dr. Peter Meissner, Operating Officer of the NGMN Alliance. “We’ve worked with our partners to create the recently released SON document and are happy to discuss the contents of the document further with vendors, operators and interested parties.“
