NGMN Alliance and TD Industry Association Initiate Cooperation on Next Generation Mobile Networks

Frankfurt, Germany and Beijing, China - June 4, 2009 – The TD Industry Association (TDIA), the group promoting the rapid and healthy development of the TD-industry, and the NGMN Alliance, the group focussing on the evolution of next generation mobile networks, have established a cooperation agreement to support the globally harmonized development of next generation mobile broadband technologies and services.

The TDIA and NGMN will work together to promote TD-LTE technology worldwide and ensure the development of a convergent standard for Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) based next generation mobile networks. This will lay the foundation to extend market scale and to ensure seamless mobile broadband experience for the customer. The two bodies will widen the scope of work on chipsets and devices, system interworking, trial coordination, spectrum requirements, as well as roaming support.

"Our cooperation with the TDIA will certainly help to ensure that next generation mobile networks will enable an exceptional user experience," stated Dr. Peter Meissner, Operating Officer of the NGMN Alliance. "The aim of this agreement is to avoid fragmentation of standards, to reduce cost and market risks, and to provide truly global services and devices for the end-user."

Yang Hua, Secretary-General of the TDIA commented, "Collaborating with the NGMN Alliance will support our efforts to promote and to develop TD-LTE technology world-wide. We will work on the synchronization of FDD/TDD development so that next generation systems will benefit from the inherent technological advantages of both TDD and FDD."

Follow-up meetings are planned for October 2009 in Geneva, where both organisations will be present at the ITU Telecom World 2009.
