NGMN Industry Conference 2008
NGMN invited for their 2nd Industry Conference on "Achievements of the NGMN Alliance and Challenges for the Mobile Broadband Ecosystem".
This year’s NGMN Industry Conference was a unique event: Top executives of NGMN Partners and the broader telecommunication industry discussed the future of mobile communications from June 25th to 27th in Frankfurt, Germany. In total, more than 300 participants from 130 companies and organisations from all over the globe attended state-of-the-art vendor demonstrations, top-level speeches, and interesting and vivid discussions at the panel sessions. We would like to thank all of you who contributed to this great success with your excellent contributions, dedication and support which were praised in the enthusiastic feedback we have received from numerous attendees.
In his keynote speech, Hamid Akhavan, Chairman of the NGMN Board, announced the decision of LTE/SAE as the first technology broadly meeting the requirements of the NGMN White Paper 3.0 (details see section “News from the Board”).
Apart from this announcement of the first candidate technology compliant with NGMN White Paper, the NGMN Industry Conference showed a strong commitment of the community to the NGMN roadmap and the most relevant topics to focus on until deployment and launch in 2010: assuring timely availability of devices and services, pursuing intensive trial activities, IPR transparency as well as spectrum availability.
Customer expectations and demand, the future of mobile devices and potentially successful services were addressed in several speeches and panel sessions. During panel sessions on mobile internet and the mobile broadband ecosystem it was emphasised that the innovators and developers will require open platforms to deliver new services to the end-users and the operator community needs to ensure that all the right enablers are in place for their use. Key elements required to make this ecosystem viable include a platform for innovation as pursued by NGMN as well as sufficient spectrum availability and a transparent IPR scheme.
